About us
The Importance of Music in Our Society
Art and music are basic human functions. Humankind and art cannot function without one another.
We have the burning desire to create, whatever it may be and however tiny or grand. The interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, the emotional response, performing, or creating.
This is no different for classical music or contemporary concert music.
Both musics have immense worth for our society; however, the problem we all know in this field is that this music is little known and hence underappreciated.
As a musician and artist it is my responsibility that others can learn to enjoy the art for which I have utter passion.
Teach In Harmony
The words are strong and meaningful, especially so since they wrote the song themselves.
“Be happy!
“Be powerful!
“Be confident!”
Children are the first in this world Children to be nurtured in Harmony, the purpose of which is to “build a lifetime of gender equity and empathy through music and emotional intelligence.”
“Music is a universal language,” said Marvin Diem, Factory Two program coordinator. “Even if you aren’t a very skilled musician, you can still send a message and get a point across.”
“Kids very early on will develop a fixed mindset about what they can and cannot do,” said Erik Gregory, executive director of Children in Harmony. “But that mindset can be changed. These kids can learn things here that they were told they couldn’t.”
The students explored a variety of emotional development and music education practices—from simple breathing exercises and drum circles to the grand finale performance of the song they wrote themselves and performed using acoustic instruments and Music Maker Jam, a beat making app.
“This program gives kids permission to be themselves and empowers them,”
How many of these gets don’t get that anywhere else? How many aren’t being empowered elsewhere?”.
The Future Sounds Good
Researchers surveyed a group of young adults, average age 21, about the frequency with which they engaged with their parents, as children, in activities such as listening to music together, attending concerts together or playing musical instruments together.
Participants reported on their memories of experiences they had between ages 8 and 13 and age 14 and older.
They also shared how they perceive their relationship with their parents now.
While shared musical experiences at all age levels were associated with better perceptions of parent-child relationship quality in young adulthood, the effect was most pronounced for shared musical experiences that took place during adolescence.
"With young kids, musical activity is fairly common -- singing lullabies, doing nursery rhymes," Harwood said. "With teenagers, it's less common, and when things are less common you might find bigger effects, because when these things happen, they're super important."
